"bridge window [io size 0x1000]: can't assign; no space" and "bridge window [io size 0x1000]: failed to assign" warnings appear during boot in a virtual environment
Issue
- During the boot process of a guest OS running on a virtualization platform like
VMware, multiple warning messages for specific PCI addresses are logged to the kernel log (dmesgorjournalctl -k):
kernel: pci 0000:00:16.4: bridge window [io size 0x1000]: can't assign; no space
kernel: pci 0000:00:16.4: bridge window [io size 0x1000]: failed to assign
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9
- A virtual machine running on a virtualization platform (e.g.,
VMware) - A configuration where virtual PCI Express Root Ports do not have any endpoint devices attached
