Why packet drops are observed during the initial phase of live migration for OpenShift Virtualization VMs?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Immediately after starting the VM live migration, packet drops are observed on the inbound communication. The drops are at an average of 2 seconds and there was no packet loss observed from the VM to external destinations. The VMs are using network from the bridge interface.
  • During the migration, the VM's MAC address is flapping between the source and destination nodes, causing a temporary block of the MAC address at the network layer. Because of this, VM lose network connectivity for sometime after live migration.

Environment

  • Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4.12 and above
    • Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization 4.12 and above
