During reboot or "service network restart" I see "register_cnic failed"

Issue

During reboot or "service network restart" I see the following error:

"Jan 19 13:55:58 hostname kernel: bnx2 0000:03:00.0: eth0: register_cnic failed"

Switched out a Broadcom network card on the system and after that receiving a register_cnic error.
Not detecting new network card

Environment

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 or above
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (all versions)
Broadcom cards (list not comprehensive)
- Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5708 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 11)
