Why does my Java application throw a SSLHandshakeException: "unable to find valid certification path to requested target" when using SSL?

Our JBoss application or EAP component is generating the following error message while trying to connect to a URL:
javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException:sun.security.validator.ValidatorException: PKIX path building failed: sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find valid certification path to requested target -
Getting
sun.security.validator.ValidatorException: PKIX path building failedafter upgrading Red Hat JBoss EAP or installing new application.
