Java application throws SSL/TLS exception: SSLHandshakeException: "unable to find valid certification path to requested target"

Issue

  • SSL/TLS Connection fails and log has this error:

    javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException:sun.security.validator.ValidatorException: PKIX path building failed: 
sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find valid certification path to requested target

Environment

  • Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (EAP)
  • Red Hat JBoss Fuse
  • Java application attempting to make a SSL/TLS connection
