CUPS takes too long to restart, or does not restart, in RHEL 8

Issue

  • CUPS in RHEL 8 takes up to 20 minutes to restart

  • CUPS in RHEL 8 does not restart. We see the following messages in the systemd journal:

    Nov 13 23:35:40 systemd[1]: Starting CUPS Scheduler...
Nov 13 23:37:11 systemd[1]: cups.service: start operation timed out. Terminating.
Nov 13 23:37:11 systemd[1]: cups.service: Failed with result 'timeout'.
Nov 13 23:37:11 systemd[1]: Failed to start CUPS Scheduler.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8.0-8.5
  • Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) 2.2.6
