RHEL8: TCP encapsulated in UDP tunnel is dropped on vmxnet3 adapters

Issue

  • VXLAN on vmxnet3 in RHEL 8.3 might cause TCP packet length to be calculated wrong in VXLAN frames.
  • VMware ESX drops packets coming from RHEL 8 container host machines.
  • After scaling the workers into the existing OpenShift cluster not all the functionality of the OpenShift SDN works.
  • Podman pod-to-pod connectivity is slow or reaches timeout.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8.3 and 8.4.
  • VMware ESSi vmxnet3 adapter with UDP tunnel such as vxlan or GRE
  • Commonly used for container networking such as third-party Kubernetes flannel
