kdump fails to start with the error message: "kexec_file_load failed: Required key not available" in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.3 or earlier when UEFI secure boot is disabled

Issue

  • After updating kexec-tools, kdump.service fails to start with the following messages.

    # systemctl status kdump
    ● kdump.service - Crash recovery kernel arming
    ...
    kdumpctl[689294]: kexec_file_load failed: Required key not available
    kdumpctl[689294]: kexec: failed to load kdump kernel
    kdumpctl[689294]: Starting kdump: [FAILED]
    
  • After updating kexec-tools, kdump.service fails to start with the following messages in /var/log/kdump.log

    kexec_file_load failed: Required key not available
    + 2021-09-01 02:00:00 /usr/bin/kdumpctl@709: ret=255
    + 2021-09-01 02:00:00 /usr/bin/kdumpctl@710: set +x

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.3 or earlier
  • UEFI Secure Boot disabled
  • kernel-4.18.0-193.28.1.el8_2 or earlier
  • kexec-tools-2.0.20-34.el8 or later
