Audio support for Red Hat OpenStack consoles

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 3.0
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 4.0

Issue

  • Does OpenStack support audio playback when connected to the guest console?
  • I tried to start up the OpenStack spicehtml5 services, but it fails with the following messages:

Can not find spice html/js/css files at /usr/share/spice-html5.

Resolution

At the time of this writing, Red Hat OpenStack only supports VNC for connecting to the console of instances. Since the VNC protocol does not support audio transfer, Spice support would be needed. There is no workaround for this issue. If Spice support is requested for connecting to OpenStack instances, please open a case with Red Hat Support1.

Root Cause

Support for SPICE remote console access was recently added to the Compute (Nova) and Dashboard (Horizon) services. The spice-htm5 package require to support SPICE access is however not included in this release. As such SPICE remote console access remains unsupported at this time.
