Subscription-Manager Returning "HTTP error (404 - Not Found)" When Registering System to Red Hat Customer Portal

Issue

When registering, or re-registering, a system to the Red Hat Customer Portal using the subscription-manager register command, the following error message is returned:

# subscription-manager register
Registering to: subscription.rhsm.redhat.com:443/subscription
Username: <username>
Password: 
HTTP error (404 - Not Found): Unit with ID "*abc-123-def-456-ghi*" could not be found.

Environment

Most common with:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • Any system being registered, or re-registered, to the Red Hat Customer Portal that is using the Red Hat Employee SKU

Could potentially impact:

  • Any large customer organization that is registering systems directly to the Red Hat Customer Portal, opposed to leveraging a Satellite Server Management Environment.
  • Other Red Hat products being registered to the Red Hat Customer Portal, opposed to a localized management environment.

There is no evidence or indication that this bug is affecting any other Red Hat Customer Portal products. Specifically it does not appear to be affecting those products that are associated with cloud.redhat.com, for example Red Hat Insights, Ansible Automation Hub, or Ansible Automation Analytics.
