s390 Layer 3 qeth hipersocket interface does not function at boot and "There is no kernel module to support discipline 0" message seen in logs

Issue

  • A newly added Layer 3 qeth device is not functional at boot and has to be manually activated.
  • The following messages are seen in the logs at boot:

    kernel: qeth: loading core functions
    kernel: qeth: register layer 2 discipline
    kernel: qeth 0.0.1234: Completion Queueing supported
    kernel: qeth 0.0.1234: There is no kernel module to support discipline 0

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) for IBM System Z
  • qeth driver
