Why is my /var/log/messages flooded with these messages "hpet1: lost 1 rtc interrupts" ?

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • Some processes are not able to access the hardware clock.
  • /dev/rtc is being used by an application, which will be locked so none of the other processes are able to access /dev/rtc.
  • The system keeps on generating logs:
kernel: hpet1: lost 2 rtc interrupts
kernel: hpet1: lost 1 rtc interrupts
kernel: hpet1: lost 575 rtc interrupts
kernel: hpet1: lost 2594 rtc interrupts
kernel: hpet1: lost 285 rtc interrupts
kernel: hpet1: lost 275 rtc interrupts

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 and above
  • VMWare virtual guest
  • HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9
