In RHEL, what files are in /var/spool/cups, and how can I change what is saved there?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • I found several files in /var/spool/cups after printing. Some begins with "d" (e.g. d00016), and others begin with "c" (e.g. c00016) I would like to know more detail for those files in /var/spool/cups.
  • Can we find print files that are currently printing or stuck in any of the directories in Red Hat Enterprise Linux?
  • How do I configure cups to remove the job files (d*) and the job history (c*) files from /var/spool/cups/ after successful jobs have been sent to printer queues.
  • What is the usage of the PreserveJobFiles option for CUPS? Can this be specified per printer, or does every printer & job on the system need to apply this?
  • With "PreserveJobFiles on" what purges the job files over what time period? Or Is it the completely manual process?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux, all versions
  • Common Unix Printing System (CUPS), all versions
