Can we delete data tmp and work directories from JBoss EAP 5 / 4

Issue

Is there any kind of settings in JBoss which won't create data tmp temp and work dir's at server startup? I am sure we can delete tmp and work at server start up and disable temp in jsr88-service.xml. Are data and temp any useful? Can we disable it permanently?
Is there a configuration setting to auto delete the content of the work folder?
The /server/default/work directory did not clear down the folder correctly on startup and was still referencing the previously deployed war files/jsp files.
