ntpd dead but pid file exists

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • We sometimes notice that the ntp service is not running:
[root@server ~]# service ntpd status
ntpd dead but pid file exists
  • Why was it not running?
  • Why is my clock not synced up after reboots when the system comes up?
  • After the server was powered back on, and the ntpd process existed but was dead, and there was a time offset of 18000 seconds.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • ntpd
  • ntpdate
