Getting error "g_utf8_collate: assertion 'str1 != NULL' failed" when using "ru_RU.CP1251" locale

Issue

  • If the system language is Russian and the encoding is CP1251, then GNOME is logging a lots of following messages in /var/log/messages:

    Apr 22 12:53:43 localhost journal: g_utf8_casefold: assertion 'str != NULL' failed
Apr 22 12:53:43 localhost journal: g_utf8_collate: assertion 'str1 != NULL' failed
  • The problem is not reproducible with the utf8 encoding. It is not showing those messages with other language(en_US.CP1251) also. The problem
    is with Russian and CP1251 only

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.6
  • glib2-2.56.1-2.el7.x86_64
