Why do I get the error "ssh Write failed: Broken pipe" from an idle SSH session?
Issue
- With login "jump servers" for SSH access having been migrated from Solaris to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 it was noticed that sessions that were idle were being terminated with the error "ssh Write failed: Broken pipe" and it was not clear why this was happening.
- Trying to resolve this problem, the client options ServerAliveInterval, ServerAliveCountMax and TCPKeepAlive options were tried without success.
- When we leave a session unattended it closes with the error message "Write failed: Broken pipe". Often after 60 minutes on the spot. But sometimes not at all.. And sometimes after a longer time period.
ssh Write failed: Broken pipe
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 clients using OpenSSH
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 "login server" using OpenSSH
