If an I/O error occurs during execution of the parted command, the partition may be invisible.

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

The parted command has a recovery function for the GUID partition table (GPT). If an I/O error occurs while the parted command recovery function is in operation, the GPT may be destroyed by the parted command and the partition can not be referenced. At that time, the following messages are output to stdout.

  • "The backup GPT table is corrupt, but the primary appears OK, so that will be used." OR
  • "The primary GPT table is corrupt, but the backup appears OK, so that will be used. " AND
  • "Input/output error"

After that, when the parted command is executed, the following message is output to the stdout and the command abnormally ends:

Error: /dev/vdb: unrecognaised disk label

In addition, since the parted command is also executed from the sosreport command, this problem may occur even if you execute the sosreport command.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
  • parted versions before parted-2.1-29 (this version was released in RHEL6.7GA)
  • parted versions before parted-2.1-21.el6_5.2 (this version was released in 6.5.z)
