Why the date and time jumps in /var/log/messages?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • The date and time appears to jump back and forth in /var/log/messages or in other rsyslog log files, even though the system clock is synchronized using NTP or other methods.
  • Old log messages reappear in new log files.
  • With rsyslog of version lower than rsyslog-8.24.0-16.el7 the rsyslogd daemon process may also crash. See Solution 3226751 for details.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7
