RHEL6: CIFS mounts with autofs inaccessible with the Error "CIFS VFS: Send error in SessSetup = -128"

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • On a fresh reboot, cifs mounts with sec=krb5 work properly. Over time, these mounts start to fail.
  • CIFS mount becomes inaccessible after the credentials expire and we receive the following errors when autofs debug is enabled
kernel: CIFS VFS: Send error in SessSetup = -128
automount[7568]: >> mount error(128): Key has been revoked
automount[7568]: >> Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)
automount[7568]: mount(generic): failed to mount //cifs_server/homeshares$/user_share (type cifs) on /mnt/user
automount[7568]: dev_ioctl_send_fail: token = 181
automount[7568]: failed to mount /mnt/user

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.7 and below
  • automounting CIFS shares
  • Kerberos authentication (sec=krb5) to the CIFS file-server
