Unable to get a shell on ssh after upgrading to 6.8 - Debug logs show "syslogin_perform_logout: logout() returned an error"

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  1. After upgrading from 6.4 to RHEL 6.8, there are reports that an ssh does not display a shell when ssh'ing from a different linux machine and the connection is dropped when ssh'ed from putty.

  2. When the shell is not obtained, any commands typed in the blank space does get executed.

Example: We can do a command such as "touch a.txt" then "exit" to get out of the ssh session." The file a.txt does get created.

Environment

  1. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.8
  2. openssh-clients-5.3p1-118.1.el6_8.x86_64
    libssh2-1.4.2-2.el6_7.1.x86_64
    bash-4.1.2-41.el6_8.x86_64
    openssh-5.3p1-118.1.el6_8.x86_64
    openssh-server-5.3p1-118.1.el6_8.x86_64
