When do I get "Clearing orphaned inode" errors in /var/log/messages ?

Issue

  • After a system reboot below messages were reported in /var/log/messages:
/dev/mapper/vg_local-LogVol05: clean, 33/196608 files, 29888/786432 blocks
/dev/mapper/vg_local-LogVol02: recovering journal
/dev/mapper/vg_local-LogVol02: Clearing orphaned inode 408612 (uid=0, gid=0, mode=0100755, size=627552)
/dev/mapper/vg_local-LogVol02: clean, 103504/655360 files, 725912/2621440 blocks
/dev/mapper/vg_local-LogVol03: recovering journal
/dev/mapper/vg_local-LogVol03: Clearing orphaned inode 132279 (uid=0, gid=0, mode=0100644, size=526)
/dev/mapper/vg_local-LogVol03: Clearing orphaned inode 395164 (uid=0, gid=502, mode=040770, size=12288
  • In RHEL 6, the message is a bit different:
Jan 11 00:00:25 localhost kernel: EXT4-fs (dm-7): 19 orphan inodes deleted
Jan 11 00:00:25 localhost kernel: EXT4-fs (dm-7): recovery complete
Jan 11 00:00:25 localhost kernel: EXT4-fs (dm-7): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts:
