RHEL7 fails to mount all the filesystem on LVM at boot and drops into emergency mode.

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • The server with RHEL7.1 fails to occasionally to mount the filesystems after it is rebooted and goes into emergency mode.
  • Filesystems are on local disks
  • From emergency mode we can see:
    1) pvscan reports PV volumes ok
    2) lvscan reports all volumes inactive except /dev/rootdg/root and /dev/rootdg/swap
    3) mount -a reports missing devices /dev/mapper/rootdg-whatever
  • This is an intermittent issue; does not happen regularly.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7
  • systemd older than version 219-19.11
  • LVM Volumes
  • Local Storage
