Why do I see messages like "received packet with own address as source address" when using bonded VLAN interface to create bridge interface for KVM hosts?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Our network team tried to add an upstream 10GB link. After they did that we saw intermittent packet loss on our servers that act as KVM hosts. Other RHEl 6.3 servers that were not KVM hosts and on the same hardware did not experience any packet loss. During the upgrade the only message that we say out of the ordinary were ones like these:
messages-20121104:Oct 31 22:55:21 <hostname> kernel: bond0.1238: received packet with own address as source address
  • Do we have something mis-configured on the KVM hosts)?

  • Is there anything information that we need to give to the networking team so that we won't experience the same thing when they try to perform the upgrade again?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.3

  • qemu-KVM

  • Bonded VLAN interfaces

  • cisco catalyst 6510 switches
