RHEL5: system crashed, hung task panic, believed deadlock between rpciod and rpc.idmapd while under memory pressure

Issue

  • RHEL 5 system hang and it had to be hard rebooted.
  • Hung tasks in the messages file indicate both rpciod and rpc.idmapd are blocked for more than 120 seconds.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
    • all kernels up to RHEL5.9
  • NFSv4 client
