Unable to print a file due to "client-error-not-possible" or "too many jobs" in RHEL

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Getting an error "lp: Unable to print a file: client-error-not-possible" when attempting to print a file from the command line using "lpr filename" in Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
  • Printing halted with error "/usr/bin/lpr: Too many active jobs"
  • We noticed that we have an issue with printing via CUPS software. We issue a lot of print jobs every night but on every Friday we are missing some prints. We found that in the CUPS error_log file we are receiving following messages:

Returning IPP client-error-not-possible for Create-Job (ipp://localhost:631/printers/printq) from localhost

  • Does MaxJobs control the maximum number of simultaneous jobs, or is it how many job files are saved when PreserveJobFiles is on?

  • We are facing an issue "Too many active jobs" error from the printers in our production servers. So we are unable to give a print from the servers.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8
  • Common Unix Printing System (CUPS)
