In RHEL, the CUPS "cupsd" process runs at 100% for more than 30 seconds

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • The CUPS cupsd process runs at 100% for 30 seconds straight.
  • Using the web interface if we click "Show all jobs" the cupsd process will consume 100% of the CPU (one core out of four) for 260 seconds.
  • CUPS starts using more CPU resources when we access CUPS UI or use lpstat.
  • CUPS stops responding, usually after lpstat or similar command.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5, 6, and 7
  • Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) 1.3.7, 1.4.2, and 1.6.3
