How to change the display resolution via command line ?

- Red Hat Enterprise Linux installed without GUI. All the text appears big on local console.
- How to change the screen resolution from the console via the command line parameters ?
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
- Run-level 3 or virtual console
