Yum fails with "[Error -1] Metadata file does not match checksum" error while updating system

Issue

Yum update returns error "[Error -1] Metadata file does not match checksum".

While trying to update the packages on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 system from RHN Satellite server the following error occurs:

Error: failed to retrieve repodata/filelists.xml.gz from <channel_repository_name>
error was [Errno -1] Metadata file does not match checksum"

Environment

Red Hat Network (RHN) Satellite server or Red Hat Network (RHN) Classic
Red Hat Enterprise Linux client system, version 5 or later
