Unexpected behaviour with NFS from NetApp filers on Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux automatically mounts .snapshot directories from a NetApp filer via NFS even though the live directory is already mounted via NFS.
  • Messages similar to the following are seen in the system logs:
Aug 6 17:15:48 rhelserver kernel: NFS: server filer123 error: fileid changed
Aug 6 17:15:48 rhelserver kernel: fsid 0:1a: expected fileid 0x1d05989, got 0xe0706
  • My system automatically mounts .snapshot directories from a Netapp filer via NFS when the path contains non-UTF8 characters that results in gnome-vfs crashing/restarting

Environment

  • NFS server: NetApp filer
  • NFS client: Red Hat Enterprise Linux
