rpc.idmapd process dies randomly on RHEL6

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux(RHEL) 6

Issue

  • rpc.idmapd dies randomly and the kernel reports the following:
kernel: [505261.523335] nfsd: nfsv4 idmapping failing: has idmapd died?

Resolution

The bug has been tracked through BZ:751089 and an advisory has been released through RHBA-2012-0964. Please apply the errata if the issue is observed in your environment.

Root Cause

the rpc.idmapd daemon handled the SIGUSR* signal incorrectly. As a consequence, idmapd could, under certain circumstances, close without an error message.
