How to skip failed boot-time filesystem checks?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • A backend storage issue resulted in many systems requiring console interaction to boot.
  • Systems fail at the filesystem check during the boot process with:
*** An error occurred during the file system check.
*** Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
*** when you leave the shell.
*** Warning -- SELinux is active
*** Disabling security enforcement for system recovery.
*** Run 'setenforce 1' to reenable.
Give root password for maintenance
(or type CTRL-D to continue):
  • The filesystem is not a system filesystem, but had filesystem checks enabled in /etc/fstab.
  • Pressing CTRL-D at the maintenance shell results in a reboot.
  • Need a streamlined method to skip maintenance shell.
  • Does fastboot parameter skip filesystem checks?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
