Why 'du /var' reports bogus message 'WARNING: Circular directory structure' if named is running?

Issue

  • On running 'du /var' reporting following error messages in Red Hat Enterprise Linux if named service is running,
WARNING: Circular directory structure.
This almost certainly means that you have a corrupted file system.
NOTIFY YOUR SYSTEM MANAGER.
The following directory is part of the cycle:
  `/var/named/chroot/var/named'
  • If service named is stopped, the warning messages goes away.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.2
  • Packages bind and bind-chroot are installed with named operational
