Plug-in required for HP LaserJet printer in RHEL

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • I get the following message when I try to print:

Printer HP-Laserjet-Professional-P-1102w: HP Device requires a proprietary binary Plug-in, run hp-plugin.

  • The PPD file that is recommended by the lpinfo -m command in How to setup printers from the command line using lpadmin in RHEL, says something like "requires proprietary plugin". For example:

    # lpinfo -m | grep 1212nf
drv:///hp/hpijs.drv/hp-laserjet_professional_m1212nf_mfp-hpijs.ppd HP LaserJet Professional m1212nf MFP hpijs, 3.13.7, requires proprietary plugin
drv:///hp/hpcups.drv/hp-laserjet_professional_m1212nf_mfp.ppd HP LaserJet Professional m1212nf MFP, hpcups 3.13.7, requires proprietary plugin

  • The Driver field for the printer I just installed is:

Driver: HP LaserJet Professional m1217nfw MFP, hpcups 3.14.10, requires proprietary plugin (color)

How do I install this "required proprietary plugin"? How do I check to make sure it's installed?
