Why do AMD Opteron 6200 "Bulldozer" Processors show the incorrect number of CPU cores?

Issue

  • AMD Opteron 6200 "Bulldozer" processors have 16 cores. However on RHEL 6, it is showing cpu cores = 8.

  • RHEV 3's vdsm shows half the expected cores on a system with 12 cores:
vdsClient -s 0 getVdsCapabilities | grep cpuCores
    cpuCores = 6
