Red Hat OpenShift Extended Update Support (EUS) Overview

4.12+ Extended Update Support (EUS)

With the OpenShift Container Platform 4.12 release, Red Hat is adding an additional 6 months of Extended Update Support phase on even-numbered OpenShift releases for the x86_64 architecture, starting with 4.12. The EUS phase will follow the maintenance phase for each given EUS release.

  • Note: While OpenShift Container Platform 4.8 and 4.10 are EUS releases (that enable a tested upgrade flow from one EUS release to the next); they do not have an additional EUS lifecycle phase.

EUS is provided with x86-64 versions of Red Hat OpenShift Kubernetes Engine, Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, and Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus Premium subscriptions. It is also available as an Add-on to x86-64 versions of Red Hat OpenShift Kubernetes Engine, Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, and Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus Standard subscriptions. Additional information is available in the announcement blog.

Layered Components and EUS Maintenance

OpenShift Container Platform includes a number of layered components, each have independent release dates, life cycles and support for EUS. In addition to layered components, there are a number of layered products across the Red Hat portfolio which may be supported on, or integrate with OpenShift Container Platform. EUS policies for these products will be outlined on their respective life cycles and documentation.

The availability of EUS support for layered components may vary for each OpenShift EUS release. For quick reference, an overview of each will be provided on this page, underneath the given EUS release of OpenShift Container Platform. In the event a required component has no EUS support, customers should avoid using EUS, and instead upgrade their clusters within the conventional Full Support and Maintenance support phases.

The following link[s] outlines life cycled layered components and products1 with the support status throughout the various OpenShift EUS2 support periods. More information for each component should be available in the documentation.

Historical State Details

As Red Hat adjusts its life cycles statuses to better cater to customer demand, this page is updated to help explain those changes. When statuses drop out of support (based on time), these explanations are retained for historical purposes.

4.8 & 4.10 Extended Update Support (EUS)

All (post 4.7) even numbered minor releases (eg 4.8, 4.10, 4.12) will be labeled as Extended Update Support (EUS) releases.

These releases introduce a verified upgrade path between EUS releases, permitting customers to streamline upgrades of worker nodes and formulate upgrade strategies of EUS to EUS OpenShift releases that will cause less reboots of nodes.

Use of OpenShift Container Platform 4.8 and 4.10 EUS under these terms applies to Premium and Standard OpenShift Container Platform Entitlements, as stated in the announcement blog.

4.6 Extended Update Support (EUS)

Extended Update Support with 4.6 is an additional maintenance and support offering, available as part of the OpenShift Premium subscription. With 4.6 EUS, Red Hat provides support and critical maintenance updates, as outlined in the OpenShift 4.6 product Life Cycle, for the OpenShift 4.6 release. OpenShift EUS allows customers to remain on the same minor release of OpenShift for a fixed period of 14 months beyond the Full Support phase end date. This provides customers with an approximate 18 months4 total support coverage for a minor version.

EUS is provided only with Red Hat OpenShift Premium subscriptions, clusters with Standard subscriptions will not be applicable for EUS content or support. EUS is available for all supported OpenShift architectures; x86_64, IBM POWER and IBM z. Variances for the availability of OpenShift layered components for architectures may apply.

Footnotes

  1. Availability of layered components or products may differ for non-x86_64 architectures
  2. Product listings limited to Red Hat offerings which are exclusively for use on or with OpenShift Container Platform
  3. Layered Component/Product will denote the release for which Extended Update Support is available. These will be outlined in the corresponding section of the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform Life Cycle Policy
  4. In order to provide additional overlap with the superseding OpenShift EUS release, OpenShift 4.6 EUS end date is extended to Oct 27, 2022, or 24 months of total support.
