As Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 transitions into the Extended Life Phase, what is Red Hat’s suggested course of action for customers?

Your Red Hat subscription gives you continuous access to all active versions of the Red Hat software in both binary and source form, including all security updates and bug fixes. As Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 transitions out of the Full/Maintenance Phases, we strongly recommend that you take full advantage of your subscription services and upgrade to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 or 9, which contain compelling new features and enablement for modern hardware platforms and ISV applications. If you must stay on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, we recommend that you add the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Extended Life Cycle Support (ELS) Add-On subscription to your current Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscription. See the question below that describes ELS.

I am running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 and can’t migrate to a later version at this time. What options do I have?

  • Continue to use Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 and continue to receive access to the subscription services listed above. Note that software maintenance is not provided, and only limited technical support is available (Premium or Standard support subscriptions).
  • Continue to run Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 and purchase the Extended Life Cycle Support (ELS) Add-On subscription to continue to receive limited software maintenance and technical support (see the ELS description below).
  • Migrate to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 or 9 as soon as you can.

How can I continue to receive software maintenance (bug and security fixes) and full technical support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7?

If you require software maintenance and full technical support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, Red Hat strongly recommends that you purchase the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Extended Life Cycle Support (ELS) Add-On subscription. The Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 ELS Add-On complements your Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscription and provides software maintenance services not otherwise available in the Extended Life Phase.

Example: One RHEL Server subscription + One RHEL ELS (physical or virtual nodes) subscription; One RHEL for Virtual Data Centers (unlimited guests) subscription + One RHEL ELS (unlimited guests) subscription. ELS is only available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server subscriptions, and is only available for the last RHEL 7 minor release; RHEL 7.9. ELS is not applicable to all RHEL versions covered by Extended Life Phase.

If I have a hypervisor, properly subscribed with RHEL VDC, how do I subscribe a subset of those systems with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux ELS add-on?

Can I purchase the instance-based versions of the add-on just for the systems that need them rather than the Unlimited Guest version of the add-on?

Yes, if only a subset of systems on a hypervisor system subscribed using a Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Virtual Datacenters, or similar subscription, need to be subscribed with the ELS add-on, customers can purchase the instance based add-on subscriptions to cover those systems using ELS. While this is possible, customers are strongly encouraged to purchase the appropriate unlimited Guest add-on in case the environment changes over time to avoid over-deployment risks.

Can I Purchase RHEL 7 ELS Through the Public Cloud?

Yes, RHEL 7 ELS is currently available in the AWS (Global | EMEA) and Azure (Global | EMEA) Marketplaces.

Note: If you are using an AWS/Azure account created in Japan, you can purchase the Pay As You Go (PAYG) RHEL ELS add-ons through the Private Offer process, instead of directly from the Marketplace. For details, please consult your sales representatives or refer to the following page for details: You cannot purchase Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 ELS from AWS/Azure Marketplace

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Extended Life Cycle Support (ELS) includes support for the Add-Ons, High Availability, and Resilient Storage.

What will happen to my Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 systems on July 1, 2024, if I decide not to purchase an Extended Life Cycle Support (ELS) Add-On subscription?

During the Extended Life Phase, a Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscription provides continued access to previously released content on the Red Hat Customer Portal and other content such as documentation and the Red Hat Knowledge Base. Advice for migrating to currently supported Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions may also be provided.

For versions of products in the Extended Life Phase, Red Hat will provide limited ongoing technical support. No bug fixes, security fixes, hardware enablement, or root-cause analysis will be available during this phase, and support will be provided on existing installations only.

How are Red Hat Satellite installations affected?

After June 30, 2024, customers with active Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 subscriptions can continue to use Satellite to consume previously released bug fixes, security errata, and product enhancements as well as provision Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 systems. Customers will continue to consume a Red Hat Enterprise Linux entitlement for every server associated with Red Hat Satellite. Red Hat Satellite customers who purchase Extended Life Cycle Support (ELS) for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 will need to reconfigure their Satellite server to access the RHEL 7 ELS content set when that content set is made available.

What is the difference between the Extended Life Phase and the Extended Life Cycle Support Add-On?

During the Extended Life Phase, a Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscription provides continued access to previously released content on the Red Hat Customer Portal and other content such as documentation and the Red Hat Knowledge Base. Advice for migrating to currently supported Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions may also be provided.

For versions of products in the Extended Life Phase, Red Hat will provide limited ongoing technical support. No bug fixes, security fixes, hardware enablement, or root-cause analysis will be available during this phase, and support will be provided on existing installations only.

Extended Life Cycle Support is an add-on that delivers certain Red Hat defined Critical and Important security fixes and selected (at Red Hat discretion) urgent priority bug fixes and troubleshooting for the last minor release of RHEL 7; RHEL 7.9. This add-on is available from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2028.

How is the Extended Life Cycle Support Add-On packaged and sold?

ELS is an optional Add-On subscription that allows customers, for a fee, to extend their support one year at a time. ELS is typically sold as single year subscriptions, however it is possible to buy multiple years up front as part of a multi-year contract. A customer must already have paid for a Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscription before purchasing the ELS Add-On subscription for it. ELS Add-On is applicable to Standard or Premium subscriptions and can not be applied to self-support subscriptions.

Note that ELS should be purchased prior to the start date of the ELS period (July 1, 2024, for RHEL 7). Otherwise, the ELS Add-On subscription must be back-dated to that start date.

Extended Life Cycle Support and Developer for Teams (D4T)

How does Extended Life Cycle Support and Developer for Teams (D4T) work? Can I use ELS and D4T together? For some purposes, yes, absolutely! ELS subscriptions for RHEL may be used for the ongoing maintenance of applications on RHEL 7 servers subscribed to ELS. This should not be used for the development of new applications.

I have an existing application that needs to be maintained through the RHEL 7 ELS period, can we use ELS for the pipeline subscribed through D4T?

Yes, for this use case that's acceptable. While D4T Subscriptions are $0, the required ELS subscriptions have a price associated with them . Your account team will be able to help you coordinate your Developer for Teams and ELS subscriptions.

I have D4T and want to keep making new applications on RHEL 7, to deploy on RHEL 7 servers subscribed to ELS. Can I apply ELS subscriptions to their development servers for this purpose?

No, this is not an appropriate use of ELS. ELS is not intended to support new application development. Using it for maintenance of existing applications and footprints is the only acceptable usage for ELS in a development enforcement. (Note: While new application deployments with ELS is not appropriate, varying numbers of servers for scaling existing applications up and down is appropriate)

Is ELS included in the no-cost D4T subscription?

No. Each instance must have a paid subscription. Please contact your account team.
