httpd mod_proxy error: "Connection reset by peer"

Issue

  • Using httpd as the reverse proxy with mod_proxy and Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) as the back end, the following error results when accessing from httd, but when accessing IIS directly it is working:
    [error] [client 10.186.12.173] (104)Connection reset by peer: proxy: error reading status line from remote server example.com
[error] [client 10.186.12.173] proxy: Error reading from remote server returned by /example
  • We see this error frequently when using httpd to forward requests to JBoss via mod_proxy.
  • 502 proxy error Reason: Error reading from remote server

Environment

  • JBoss Enterprise Web Server (EWS)
  • Red Hat Enteprise Linux (RHEL)
  • Apache httpd
