How to make NIC names persistent across reboots in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Sometimes a system reboots and has reordered its network interfaces at boot time, resulting in a different naming of those interfaces. How to guarantee consistent NIC names across reboots?
  • I removed quad port network card from the system and attached a new one. After attaching the new quad port network card, network interfaces are detected in an undesired order of eth devices.
  • I replaced a server with a new one and moved the hard drives over to the new one.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
