Why does server show multiple active NTP process?

Issue

  • There are multiple NTP process on RHEL servers.
  • This issue comes most of the times after a server reboot.
  • This is resolved after a manual restart of NTP daemons.
# ps -ef | grep ntp
ntp      15026     1  0 11:29 ?        00:00:00 ntpd -u ntp:ntp -p /var/run/ntpd.pid -g
root     15029 15026  0 11:29 ?        00:00:00 ntpd -u ntp:ntp -p /var/run/ntpd.pid -g
root     15043  8054  0 11:29 pts/0    00:00:00 grep ntp
  • NTP returns a permission denied and host name not found error in log file
Jan 14 17:22:05 serverA ntpd_initres[4877]: host name not found: time.company.net
Jan 14 17:23:07 serverA ntpd_initres[4877]: host name not found: time.company.net
Jan 14 17:25:09 serverA ntpd_initres[4877]: ntpd returns a permission denied error!
Jan 14 17:26:09 serverA ntpd_initres[4877]: ntpd returns a permission denied error!
