Changes to CUPS configuration reverting after RHEL reboots

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Added a printer via the CUPS GUI, but printer disappears after reboot. Modifications via the GUI wouldn't take, and the printer file (printers.conf) had to be adjusted manually. The printers.conf configuration file doesn't seem to be taking changes after printers are added via the GUI.
  • I added and configured about 10 network printers on a RHEL 6.5 server. Application support verified that the printers were all working and printing like they needed. When the server was rebooted all of the printers are now gone.
  • Changes in printers.conf are not reflected in the CUPS Web UI screen. The lpadmin command that we used to change the ErrorPolicy setting is not reflected either.
  • After rebooting the server, I had to run the lpadmin command again to make the change to the Device URI. It seemed that the original command did not stay after a reboot.
  • I am following the steps in https://access.redhat.com/solutions/21432 ("How to setup printers from the command line using lpadmin in RHEL"). After successfully adding a new print queue, and successfully printing, I am finding that the new printer is removed after the cups service is restarted. Why doesn't the printer persist/How can the printer be added permanently?
  • I have used the command lpadmin to reset the default printer for our server. Unfortunately, after a period of time, the default printer reverts back to the original setting when I setup CUPS several years ago.
