During reboot or "service network restart" I see "register_cnic failed"

Issue

  • During reboot or "service network restart" I see the following error:
"Jan 19 13:55:58 hostname kernel: bnx2 0000:03:00.0: eth0: register_cnic failed"
  • Switched out a Broadcom network card on the system and after that receiving a register_cnic error.
  • Not detecting new network card

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 or above
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (all versions)
  • Broadcom cards (list not comprehensive)
    • Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5708 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 11)
