Logs fill with rpc.statd messages such as "Bad file descriptor"

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • System log files at /var/log/messages growing too large too quickly with many instances of
rpc.statd [25451] : my_svc_run() - select: Bad file descriptor
  • Our Server becomes extremely slow to respond for logon requests and NFS requests hang. Doing an ls on NFS shares hang indefinitely. /var/log was completely filled, with the messages file showing tons of instances of rpc.statd[24177]: my_svc_run() - select: Bad file descriptor. Top showed rpc.statd processes having runaway levels of activity. I tried killing those processes, but the system still had issues. The only fix was to reboot the server.
