up2date or yum failures after upgrading to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.8, 5.4, 6.0 and later

Issue

  • Yum update fails with error - [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-2, 'Name or service not known')
  • Yum fails with "Temporary failure in name resolution" while downloading packages from Red Hat Network.
  • Yum fails with HTTP Error 400: Bad Request
  • Yum fails with following error:

    # yum check-update 
    Loaded plugins: rhnplugin, security 
    rhel-x86_64-server-5                                     | 1.4 kB     00:00 
    Error: failed to retrieve repodata/7c90eaea9d2a7095c6f7943b1fc1b5e9dc58cd10-primary.xml.gz from rhel-x86_64-server-5 
    error was [Errno 12] Timeout: <urlopen error timed out> 
    
  • Yum update fails with " Error: certificate verify failed " error.

  • Yum update fails with below error message:

    Error: failed to retrieve repodata/666c5761e33f453c00e26e9bafc5f63275e9aae78bf0e2dfd2c19f34ceefdc27-primary.xml.gz from rhel-x86_64-server-6
    error was [Errno 14] Peer cert cannot be verified or peer cert invalid
    
  • Yum update fails with below error message:

    Error: failed to retrieve repodata/20e414feb7b32f7cbaba88f20fb91793f46a3a30d43747bbd6c689db2bb27988-primary.xml.gz from rhel-x86_64-server-6
    error was [Errno 14] PYCURL ERROR 7 - "couldn't connect to host"
    
  • After registering the system on RHN, executing yum packages & update the system, it resolves the dependencies and lists the packages and its size which will be installed/upgraded but after entering "Y" to proceed with the installation it hangs and doesn't proceed further.
