Configure Fibre Channel Port

Latest response

When I installed RHEL 6 on my server, I did not have any Fibre Channel devices connected to the adapter installed.

I have since connected the Fibre Channel port to a switch to which I also have connected 2 Fibre Channel tape drives.

I can see a WWN on the Fibre Channel switch.

I am wondering if I need to do any further configuration in the OS in order for the server to use the Fibre Channel port, similar to the configuration of the ethernet port.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Hello Tom,

We need to scan the scsi bus to detect the fibre channel devices after they have been assigned/atached. Please use https://access.redhat.com/site/solutions/3941.

Tape devices should be detected if the st module is present. See https://access.redhat.com/site/solutions/45955

If the system has been rebooted after attaching the devices, check cat /proc/scsi/scsi to verify that the devices have been detected.

If the issue persists, please open a service request at https://access.redhat.com/support/cases/new/

Thank you
Nitin

Also remember that you can use the systool utility to verify that your host is actually able to see and interrogate the tape devices on the FC links (e.g., systool -c scsi_tape -v). Also, depending on the HBAs you're using, tools like SANSurfer and HBAnyWare can be used.

Hi Tom Salciccia - I highly recommend referring to the Vendor docs for your application (presumably a Backup Product) and the fiber cards. I have found that tuning tape drives is more involved than your typical SAN tuning for storage and seems to be further more specific to the environment. If you would like to provide the Software product and Fiber cards you are using (as well as whether you are using the RHEL-native drives/utils or the Vendor-supplied ones) we could provide more relevant pointers.

Sorry for the delay in getting back. We did get the system up and running. It was a bit of a scamble, and I can't really recall exactly what our steps were. I had a cable issue in the middle of it. But I did verify that "st" was present, and everything built from there. I didn't use the "systool", but I installed it and it looks like a helpful tool. Thanks for everyone's support.

Glad you got this resolved, Tom. Thanks for following up.
