Order of steps to migrate Satellite by backup/restore

I'm trying to migrate my Satellite server from RHEL 7 VM to a RHEL 8 VM by backup/restore. The docs say the new server must have the same IP and hostname as the old one; makes sense. The docs don't address the details of registration: do I register the new server as a new registration, do I unregister the old and then register the new with the same hostname, or does the backup/restore just make sure the existing registration now applies to the new server? If any unregister/register is needed, what's the best order of steps to get it done? Is any of this changed by the current semi-migration of subscription service from access.redhat.com to console.redhat.com?
