Reinstall X-windows system
I have a RHEL6 Workstation with a Nvidia CUDA-capable video card. Recently, my X-windows system crashed and I have been unable to restart windows. I have tried using older kernels and re-installing the Nvidia drivers, to no avail.
I am comptemplating re-installing the X-windows system.
Would it be safe to use:
yum group remove "X Windows System"
yum group install "X Windows System"
How should I keep track of packages that would not be reinstalled? What services would I lose?
Do you have some advice?
I greatly appreciate your help.

Hello Don,
Running 'yum groupremove "X Window System"' will remove X.org and its dependencies completely from your machine. You can reinstall the entire group by runnig the 'yum groupinstall "X Window System"'. Although this will reinstall the entire X Window System, you still might have trouble running X as reinstalling might not fix the actual source of the problem.
The right approach, imho, would be to figure out the reason behind X not working on your machine and fix that. (Logs from /var/log might provide a clue).
By removing X window system group from your machine, you will only lose the ability to use a GUI to interact with your machine. Any servers (mail/web/version-control etc.) will still exist and you can continue to use your machine via the command line.
Cheers,

Hi Don!
Are you using the NVIDIA card with the native NVIDIA drivers? If so, you might be able to restore service by booting the machine into single-user mode and re-running the driver installer. This process is described in a little bit of detail here:
http://www.twodee.org/weblog/?p=1056
It is possible that your Nouveau blacklist directive was removed (or not generated), if you are using the native drivers. The article talks a little bit about the blacklist process.
Partha's note about including logs from /var/log would be helpful, including /var/log/Xorg.0.log from the last attempted run. It will indicate which driver is being used (the native NVIDIA driver or Nouveau, and any configuration shenanigans.)
Thank you very much for your kind responses. As you anticipated removing and reinstalling the "X Window System" did not solve the issue.
I have sent my log files to Nvidia, but they were unable to suggest a solution.
I have rolled back the kernel. And I have reinstalled the Nvidia driver which inserts the "rdblacklist command"
I have also included log files from the "startx" command and from Xorg.0.log below.
If you could provide me with any ideas about what is causing this failure, I would be most appreciative.
Thank you very much.

startx.log:
I have uploaded my log files to my Google drive, which can be accessed with the following link:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwrafpvuysVgcFJzZEx3Ml9sX3c/edit
The folder also included the information collected in the bug report sent to Nvidia Support.
If anyone can give me insight into the cause of why I cannot start X-windows, I would greatly appreciate it.
