Gluster and RHEV - Square pegs and round holes.

Latest response

Hello, I have 4 hosts in my test cluster and I am trying various ways of setting up RHEV 3.1. I am wondering about the new gluster capabilities of RHEV and am wondering how to use the local storage on my cluster as a gluster volume.

I can think of two ways:
1) run gluster along side the hypervisor
2) run gluster in a virtual machine with the local disks attached.

I didn't try option 1) yet but I had a go with option 2) and hit some problems. https://access.redhat.com/discussion/attaching-local-sas-devices-vms Can someone give me some pointers on how I should set this up. Possible caveats? P.S. The Servers are HP GL380 Gen8 servers with 7x 600GB sas disks and 1x 100GB ssd. I have a 10G and a QDR Infiniband network. I am using an Oracle 7320 ZFS appliance over NFS as primary storage domain. Thanks, Andrew

running gluster on the same hosts that are rhev hypervisors is not supported yet.

RHEV 3.1 introduced, as a tech preview, two features: a UI to manage Gluster nodes/clusters and a POSIXFS storage type, that can be used with Gluster (among other storage types)

I understand what you are trying to do, as it definitely makes sense, but there are several technical implications that make this problematic for now. We are definitely working in this exact direction though
