Cannot install Fedora Core 15 or 17 Guest on RHEVM 6.3 / RHEVH 3.1 Beta

Latest response

I've not been able to install either Fedora Core 15 or 17 on my new RHEVManager 6.3 / RHEVH 3.1 Beta setup.

I've successfully installed:

  • Ubuntu 12
  • Windows 7
  • Windows XP
  • Centos 6.3

When I start the VM with either of the Fedora Install CDs, it starts booting the CD and then goes to a blank screen.

Any ideas?

VM is defined as 1GB RAM/20GB DISK thin provisioned, SINGLE CPU.

I tried upping to 2GB RAM, made no difference.

Thanks,

James

Nothing?

Hi James, I think you might have us stumped on this :)

We've been making the rounds to find some guidance here and appreciate your patience. We will get back to you as soon as possible.

Hi James,

Eventhough you would be able to install other linux distributions in RHEV, only RHEL and Windows VMs are officially tested and supported. Please check the following URL:

https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Virtualization/3.1-Beta/html/Administration_Guide/Supported_virtual_machines.html

Having said that, can you check if you can start the VM using a different console than the one configured. For example, instead of spice try VNC. Also what is the status of the VM in RHEV Manager.

Thanks,

Anil

Anil,

That's kinda a cop out isn't it :)

Anyway, yes, I already tried accessing the console via SPICE and VNC.  No change.

RHEVM thinks the VM is up and running HOWEVER CPU utilization is showing as 100% on the VM when the screen goes blank.

I tried updating RHEVM yesterday using "yum update" but kept getting an error.  Some package wasn't available.  I'll get the error and post it.

Tried everything again yesterday.  Installed Windows 2012 in a VM successfully (Using IDE disk since I can't get virtio-xxx.vfd to be seen by RUN ONCE).  But still cannot get Fedora Core 15 or 17 to install.

James

Hi James,

The point is that if its not a supported OS, we have limitations to debug it in detail.

However I tried to reproduce the problem from my side and was not reproduciable. I could install F17, on RHEV3.1. Following are my environment details,

- rhevm-3.1.0-26.el6ev.noarch

- Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Hypervisor release 6.3 (20121107.0.el6_3)

- Fedora-17-x86_64-DVD.iso

- 2G RAM

Have you able to see the Fedora welcome screen displaying "Install or Upgrade Fedora". If yes, try text mode installation instead of gui

Can you please try a different spin of Fedora. Ex: http://spins.fedoraproject.org/xfce/

Thanks,

Anil

Anil, the solution was to update my Hypervisor.  I was on 20120910 version and upgrading to the 20121107 fixed the problem.

James

Glad you got it fixed, James. Thanks for letting us know how you solved the issue too.

Hi James,

Nice to hear that you have able to solve the problem  and thanks for sharing the solution.

Anil
