  • RHEL 8.4 Ootpa - Problem launching GNOME gdm

    Posted on

    Hi all,
I have a Red Hat 8.4 virtual machine on Oracle Box that is having a problem. When I try to boot, it hangs after GNOME output. There are no errors that I see in boot.log. I changed the system to load into multi-user.target and that let me log into the system. Now when I try startx or systemctl start gdm, it just hangs on a blank black screen with a cursor.

I tried reinstalling gdm, and ran groupinstall GNOME but that did not make a difference. One error I get when running startx is “File /root/.serverauth.1599” does not exist.

I am not sure what is going on. Any ideas of what to check to help get this gdm to launch? What logging would be helpful to diagnose?
