cannot upgrade after some trouble with X

dnf upgrade gives me

Error:

(try to add '--allowerasing' to command line to replace conflicting packages or '--skip-broken' to skip uninstallable packages or '--nobest' to use not only best candidate packages)

this is probably the result of some trouble I had with X windows (I re-installed X after I tried to replace gdm with lightdm and the GUI did not come up any more).

However, how can I resolve this problem now?
